Did Apple cheat their G5 benchmarks?
June 24, 2003 10:41 AM
From Slashdot.org... It took less than a day for somebody to figure out the many ways that Apple cheated to make their newly announced G5 computer seem faster than a random Dell workstation. Apple used specialized code on their machine that doesn't work in real-world environments, disabled normally enabled features on the Dell, and only tested integer math, not floating point (decimals) math. It ends up a $1800 Dell machine still outranks the newly announced $3000 64-bit G5 Apple.
Unrelated, the Apple G5 requires nine fans to be on at all times, two of which must be running at full speed 100% of the time. No wonder the entire front of the case is covered with breathing holes. This also means a G5, after a week of use, will be full of dust bunnies and other dirt, assuming you can put up with the noise for that long.
Well, like most Apple products, at least it looks cool.
Update: Apple put out an email that claims that they did no wrong. Apple fans across the world shout in joy.

First I will say, that Apple didnt cheat, second I will say that the G5 showed on the WWDC Keynote are all preproduction models, so we will see how fast they are when the final models come out in august. Here the link which proves that Apple didnt cheat, and that the Windows machines were also optimized! http://www.luxology.net/company/wwdc03followup.aspx

Go Antoni! You tell him what it's all about. Mr. Greene doesn't realize it, but he's going to eventually have to settle his opinions with a side-by-side speed test.

All arguments toward these benchmarks have been made, there are NO optmizations to the non g5 systems. READ the actual tests via www.spec.org and u'll get a diff. story.
I'll wait till a REAL benchmark from a third party (not a macintosh funded) is released...

Macs Rule! I suffered in PC hell for to many years. Once you try the mac you will never look back.
P.S. The person who wrote the article above must be Bill Gates homo buddy.Posted March 12, 2004 1:02 PM
I own and use both PC's and Macs. I'm writing this on a Mac too. Let's face it---other that smoe style and a kick ass OS, Mac's are really no better than anything else. Their computers might not crash, but in the event they do, Apple customer service sucks major ass. A piece of hardware breaks in my PC.. I replace it for pennies. A part in my G5 breaks...Apple replaces it for a mortgage payment. I wouldn't doubt that they BS'ed on the benchmarks.. Welcome to the world of ambitious corporate niche marketing kids!

LMAO!!!!! Are you guys totally mad!! I have REAL LIFE results froma g5 as my parents brought me one for my birthday. Naturally sein asI had my own cusytom built pc i was not totally impressed but never the less i gave it a go.
With the G5 i got 67fps at 1024x768 and max details on UT2004, however on ym custom pc i got 212fps on the same settings.
CD ripping, photo editing and cpu benchmarks have been ran on both side by side and i will say my 64 bit athlon FX 53 completly pwns the mac.
Thus after being so disapointed and not wanting to send it back i gutted the G5 with a hammer threw the parts out the window (where could i sell this crap any way) and proceeded to build a P4 system in it.
Before you say that I bum Gates (which i do.. NOT) Billy boy makes windows and I run Linux on my pcs
Face it guys MACs are the worst thing ever and should be killed

I work in a mac store, and am a PC user by trade, to date ive not seen one single thing a mac can do that a pc cant do better, and for a hell of a lot less money. its definitely laughable that they could boast game performance on a G5 or any mac as well, as i have seen 2 or 3 year old PC's perform just as good, or better in games. i think apple should stick to making their displays, and the ipod, the only 2 worthwhile products they have.

Right. I have just got a G5 Imac 1.8 processor. My brothers all own P.C's. Currently 2.8 and 2.6 processors. I wouldnt say my mac is faster. I wouldnt say the P.C's are faster. Ive was a P.C user for 10years and switched to apple to see what the fuss was about and try it out for myself. Theres no major difference. P.C's seem better for games but Mac's seem more geared up for dealing with movie editing/sound production (maybe why quite alot of people in the biz use them). The main difference is that OSX is alot more relaxing atmosphere to be in than windows, which is a big bonus. It just works...
If your playing games (why? buy an XBox!!) then buy a P.C. If your using it for multi media i'd suject a mac, but if you cant afford it, (and ill say now that P.C's are better value... they are mass made so parts are alot cheaper in the first place, plus apple send alot of money on research for their products) your not going to be much worse off with a P.C. Plus you can play games you shuld be playing on an Xbox on it.Posted January 10, 2005 4:05 PM
OSX is much better than Windows XP pro (XP Home is a joke).
Mac hardware is much better quality than any PC made.We will get better G5 64bit performance when Tiger (OSX10.4) is released.I hate using Windows because it is full of holes and is prone to viruses. PCs are only good for games.Posted January 10, 2005 4:27 PM
Most of the time a PCs memory is stuffed full of viruses. I would like to see Apple's G5 benchmark run at the same time a PC is infected with a virus.
I have a Mac and a PC. I spend more time and money removing PC viruses than using my PC. My imac G5 is a please to use , looks nicer than any PC, takes up less space, is faster and quieter.People complain about Macs without ever using one (Stupid big mistake)Posted January 17, 2005 7:51 AM
learn this :
ProTools is the most Pro Audio Soft used in movie, music and such.
ProTools is develloped on Macbut
all tests MADE BY USERS ON FORUM (that means many many many tests and results (DaveC test)) shows that if you put on a PC and a MAC (same prices) the same sessions on both. PC will suport much more tracks and plugins then MAC.
what is interesting is that, this test is super easy to make (open the soft, add tracks and plugins untill overflow error, and count the numbers of tracks).
so if you make pro audio on ProTools ... no question.
of course many studio have got MAC. butmany are NOW changing to PChttp://www.apple.com

Did you hear that Microsoft is going to put the crappy G5 processors on their Xbox2. That's how much G5 processors suck.

Ok I went through a Winblows 95 box, then Winblows 98 before we DOWNgraded to XP. I had a mate with a Mac who always said it was amazing, so I went out and had a go on one. Fucking hell Mac 0wnz. After 6 years of Winblows, I bought an eMac for half the prices of my shitty XP computer. The eMac had 256 RAM and 1.25GHZ G4 - The PC has 256 RAM and 2.5GHZ Intel Pentium 4, and the Mac was around 3 x faster than the PC.
I've bought more RAM for my Mac and now it's speed, Winblows can't even fake it. I'm posting this on my Mac, rather than my sisters PC because it'd probably give me an error and download spyware if I postedon my PC =)

And one more thing, have you tried networking on Winblows ? Just moving a laptop from one wi-fi to another makes Winblows full on spaz out. Mac has Zeroconf, so it's never even asked me a question about my network, same for devices, It installs them automatically in the background and configures it for you :|
Get out of your Winblows world, it's not worth putting up with it...

Why have you not come and corrected your lies? 9 fans that must run 100 full on 100% of the time is an outright lie....I have a Dual 2.0 G5 with 9 fans and it is quieter than my POS HP P4 2.7GHz.
What an idiot....Oh...and Macs rule....anybody who says otherwise is an idiot or has NEVER used one for longer than 10 seconds.Posted June 29, 2005 10:02 PM
I just traded in a G5 to go back to a PC. I bought the G5 to upgrade my old PC for
a business startup. The G5 is a great design, but the world run on windows. My main business site is alibaba, and on the G5 I would keep getting error messages. So I dragged back the old PC from the closet, and the site ran perfectly on XP.Macs are toys, except for graphics. Look at the icons, they are amusements.Windows is for work, and work is not supposed to be fun, that is why they PAY you. There is a cottage industry making windows run on Macs, because you need torun windows apps, and the new chip for the Macs is supposed to help. But ifhave to have an emulator on a Mac, what is the point? Macs are great toys, butnot for a business.Posted August 16, 2005 9:07 PM
Windows has the weakest networking and security in the computing world. Also Windows invented the blue screen of death. Any UNIX/Linux based system, including OS X, outperforms in networking, security and stability. Windows machines are like body builders on steroids, they can lift 500 lbs but they can't run a marathon. Especially now with all the spyware. Windows is a pain. Or just use Linux, it's free and I haven't had to reboot in 6 months.

Saying Windows is for working and Macs are for play is ridiculous. If your work requires a program that only works on windows then you are pretty much stuck. But if your work requires computer programming or anything that does not involve clicking a mouse all day then you are likely better off on a UNIX based system, of which OS X has the best GUI. Most of the programming tools come pre-installed so you can do some real work. If you could not get your site to run on Safari then install another browser. Right now IE is the laughing stock of web browsers.
